The takeover of Dutch express parcels service TNT Express by American peer UPS will lead to ‘limited job losses’ in the first few years, unions say in Wednesday’s Financieele Dagblad.

The unions and TNT Express officials are due to meet today to discuss a €150m package of cuts which was announced before the takeover.
‘I hope today to make an agreement that there will be no compulsory redundancies,’ FNV official Reinier Stroo told the paper.
Nevertheless, analysts and unions believe the synergy advantages of €500m that the takeover will bring cannot be realised without reducing the workforce eventually, the paper says. TNT has a workforce of 77,000 and UPS staff of 40,000 in Europe.
Paul Jekkers of the BVPP union said he expected jobs would go in a few years when the two companies are further integrated. Therefore it is important that UPS workers get paid the same as TNT staff, he said.
UPS workers are paid in line with the transport sector pay and conditions agreement but TNT has its own in-house pay scales.
