Cabinet to reveal ‘vision’ on mortage tax breaks before summer

The cabinet will reveal its vision on the future of the Dutch system of mortgage tax relief before the summer, which is later than planned, junior finance minister Frans Weekers told MPs on Tuesday.

The paper, which looks at the position of home owners, first-time buyers and the financial effects of the tax break, should have been finalised by March 15. It was ordered by the senate in November.
Talks between the two government parties and the anti-immigration PVV on finding a new package of cuts will also look at changing mortgage tax relief. Currently in the Netherlands, home owners can deduct all the interest paid on a mortgage from tax for 30 years.
