Opta gets telling off from Brussels

Telecom watchdog Opta was rapped over the knuckles on Tuesday by the European Commission for its pricing policy on calls made between different networks.

The Commission says the tariffs networks charge each other for inter-network calls are disadvantageous to Dutch consumers who will pay twice as much as the rest of Europe.
Opta was following European guidelines which state that only direct costs can be charged. But, after a challenge by the telephony industry and a court ruling, Opta was obliged to adjust the rules so indirect costs can also be charged to the customer.
‘This is an important case in defining the role national authorities and courts should play in applying European telecom rules,’ Neelie Kroes, EU commission for the digital agenda, told Trouw.
