100,000 people sign petition for child refugee amnestyFriday 27 January 2012 Some 100,000 people have so far signed a petition calling on the government to stop deporting young refugees who have put down roots in the Netherlands, Trouw reports on Friday. GroenLinks parliamentarian Tofik Dibi, who launched the initiative, hopes the online petition will help persuade the cabinet to introduce legislation allowing children who have lived in the Netherlands for at least eight years to stay. The MP started the campaign after immigration minister Gerd Leers said he would not make an exception for Angolan youth Mauro Manuel who was faced with deportation despite living in the Netherlands since he was 10. Manuel has since been given a student visa to stay. © DutchNews.nl
A link to the petition would be nice... By CW | January 27, 2012 10:25 AM These will always be unfortunate stories of people suffering but we must have strict rules or people will abuse the good will. By Phil | January 27, 2012 11:01 AM @Editor Can you please provide information or a link to help us sign the petition? What happened to Mauro was appauling and I'd like to sign. Sure SOME people will abuse the good will, but that doesn't mean EVERYONE should be punished for the lack of scruples of one or two. By Stupid | January 31, 2012 12:24 PM |
