No speculation about new savings, says prime minister

The minority cabinet and its coalition partner, the anti-Islam PVV, have agreed not to speculate any more about where new spending cuts and savings will be made, prime minister Mark Rutte said on Monday.

Rutte made the comments while recording a television interview which will be broadcast as part of the College Tour series on Tuesday.
The PVV has already said it wants to see €4bn chopped from development aid, the CDA is looking at changes to mortgage tax relief and Rutte’s party, the right-wing VVD, want to cut spending on public broadcasters.
‘But we have to stop making this sort of statement,’ the prime minister said.
The government will decide in February or March if extra cuts – on top of the €18bn package already agreed – will be necessary. Several forecasting agencies have already said spending will have to be reduced to keep the budget deficit under control.
