The Sinterklaas moon is usually wrong, says professor

The moon shining through the trees on Sinterklaas wrapping paper and books shows the wrong moon, the Volkskrant writes on Friday.


The lunar motif comes from the song ‘See the moon shining through the trees’ which is sung to welcome the bishop as he delivers his gifts on December 5.
Astronomy professor Peter Barthel spent two weeks studying moons on Sinterklaas books and wrapping paper and concluded that most of the time he was looking at a morning moon.
‘That is plainly wrong’, the professor said. ‘Sinterklaas comes knocking at night, not early in the morning.
