Immigration minister: Mauro must now ask for student visa

Immigration minister Gerd Leers has no intention of forcing a conclusion to the issue of Angolan youth Mauro Manuel, who lost his appeal to parliament for a residency permit earlier this week.

It is now up to the 18-year-old to apply for a student visa, Leers said after today’s cabinet meeting. Only then will he be able to assess if the boy qualifies and can stay on as a student.
A majority of MPs say Mauro, who has lived in the Netherlands since he was nine, should be able to make the application from his home in Limburg. Foreign students usually have to apply in their country of origin.
