Public sector executive pay again under fire, MPs consider bonus ban

Cabinet plans to limit the pay package of public sector executives do not go far enough for MPs, it emerged during a parliamentary debate on Tuesday night.

Draft legislation from home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner would limit salaries in education, public broadcasting and water boards to a ministerial salary plus 30% – around €187,000 per year, excluding expenses and pension.
For most public sector jobs, an informal limit equivalent to the prime minister’s salary of €188,000 is already standard.
Bonuses
Labour, for example, wants a ban on bonuses for public sector executives. The party is even considering expelling members who have public sector jobs and earn more than the prime minister.
And the CDA has called for action to reduce the high salaries paid to outside consultants and interim managers who work in the public sector.
CDA MP Ger Koopmans told website nu.nl he would like to see a pay ceiling of the prime minister’s salary plus 20% for consultants and interim executives.
The subject of public sector pay has occupied parliament for the past seven years. The current debate will continue on Wednesday.
