Minister intervenes over ‘1,000th pickpocket’, calls for action

The public prosecution department in Amsterdam is under fire for deciding not to prosecute a pickpocket who was humiliated by police during her arrest.

The woman, picked up on Sunday in the city centre, was the 1,000th arrest by a special team – who stuck a note to that effect on her back after the arrest.
The incident was captured on film and broadcast by local television station AT5.
Publicity
City police chiefs criticised the action, saying it was ‘extremely inappropriate’ and the public prosecutor said it would not take legal action because of all the publicity.
But justice minister Ivo Opstelten has called on officials to explain why the ‘unfortunate pickpocket’ will not face charges, the Telegraaf reports.
‘I am for zero tolerance. Every pickpocket should be arrested and punished,’ the paper quotes him as saying.
