Drugs company fined for paying doctors to party

A pharmaceutical company from Eindhoven has been fined €45,000 for paying a number of neurologists €1,200 each to attend an ‘information afternoon’ about the use of Botox in treating migraines, Trouw reports on Friday.

The afternoon, which took place in Utrecht in March, included lunch, drinks and a ‘luxury dinner’, the paper said.
Health ministry inspectors, who had been tipped off about the gathering, said it could be seen as nothing other than an attempt to encourage doctors to prescribe Botox. Botox is not licenced to treat migraine in the Netherlands.
A spokesman for the drugs company Allergan said it stood by the high payments because the doctors were also required to read a number of academic papers.
