Bonus ban looms for executives at bail-out banks: Dutch finmin

The Netherlands is to impose a ban on bonuses for executives of banks which have been bailed out by the taxpayer and have not paid back all the money, finance minister Jan Kees De Jager told MPs on Thursday.

De Jager made the announcement during a debate on the government’s 2012 spending plans.
If a bank gets into trouble before the new legislation has been brought in, the law will be applied retroactively, De Jager said.

The minister first announced plans to tackle the bonuses at bail-out banks in March after a majority of MPs condemned the pay packages at ING.
Chief executive Jan Hommen and CFO Koos Timmermans and others were all to be given bonuses even though the bank had only paid back €10bn of the state support it had been given during the financial crisis.
Hommen withdrew the bonuses following a public outcry.
