Social security benefits cut for those in non-EU countries (update)

Social affairs minister Henk Kamp is set to slash social security benefits for people living outside the European Union, he told MPs on Monday.

The changes, which will save between €9m and €16m a year, cover benefits for widows and orphans, child benefit and help for people who are partially disabled.
In particular, widows and widowers who live in Turkey and Morocco will be hard hit, the Telegraaf says. Their benefits will be cut by over €5,000 a year as Kamp reduces pay outs to local cost of living levels.

‘Our social security system is meant for people who live in the Netherlands. It was never meant to go worldwide,’ the paper quotes Kamp as saying.
In April, the government said it planned to cut child benefit and invalidity payments to local standard of living payments.
And in July it emerged the government is no longer paying cost of living increases to pensioners who live abroad.
