Medals for the heroes of Alphen aan den Rijn

Ten people caught up in the shooting at a shopping centre in Alphen aan den Rijn in April received the Carnegie Heroes Fund medal during a presentation on Friday.

The Carnegie Heroes Fund was set up by Andrew Carnegie in the US in 1904 to recognise extraordinary acts of heroism in civilian life. The Dutch branch was founded in 1911.
The ten recipients showed exceptional bravery in shielding others when Tristan van der Vlis sprayed passersby with an automatic weapon, killing six people. He then shot himself with another gun.
One medal was presented posthumously to the owner of a fashion shop who tried to stop the gunman and was shot dead.
