Gun laws to be tightened upSunday 11 September 2011 Weapons such as the semi-automatic gun used in the Alphen aan den Rijn shopping centre shooting will no longer be legal for the general public when the gun laws are tightened up, justice minister Ivo Opstelten told a television talk show on Sunday. Opstelten did not give concrete details, because he is waiting for the official report into the Alphen shooting, which took place in April. Tristan van der Vlis, who was licenced to have five weapons and had a history of mental problems, shot dead six people and then turned a gun on himself. During the programme, Opstelten said it is not necessary to have a gun which can hit a moving object in order to carry out target practice. Nor is it necessary to have guns at home. The current way gun licences are given could also be up for reform, Opstelten said. © DutchNews.nl
It is pretty sad that people in the Netherlands do not have the right to defend themselves from their own government. By James | September 13, 2011 2:24 AM precisely the knee jerk reaction from a politician .Here in Australia we keep guns at home in special metal cabinets. The storage facilities are checked by police on a regular basis. Most gun clubs are away from built up areas and to store all members guns there would make the clubs an ideal target for ciminals. By leon belgrave | September 13, 2011 4:52 AM You would think that The Netherlands would be smarter than this. Have the Dutch so readily forgotten the over 100,000 Jews rounded up and slaughtered during the German occupation? Take away a citizen's ability to defend themselves, and you guarantee tyranny will take hold at some point. By Burt | September 13, 2011 7:57 AM

It is just a shame that these changes are always so reactionary. Waiting until after a tragedy before being discussed and implemented.
