Prime minister should comment on Wilders Norway links: D66 leader

Tuesday 02 August 2011

Prime minister Mark Rutte should comment on language used by anti-Islam campaigner Geert Wilders in the increasingly heated debate about Wilders' influence on Norwegian shooter Anders Breivik, Alexander Pechtold, leader of the Liberal democratic party D66, says in an interview with the Volkskrant.

Wilders has publicly distanced himself from Breivik's actions, describing the killings as the work of a lunatic, but has accused left-wing politicians of trying to implicate him. The PVV leader was mentioned at least 30 times in Breivik's manifesto.

'Where is the prime minister?' Pechtold said. 'Rutte cannot continue to say Wilders is simply an ally on some issues and the rest is nothing to do with me. I have to ask who is propping up who.'

The PVV has an alliance with the ruling minority coalition and has agreed to support it on the economy in return for tougher immigration rules.

Doomsday

Pechtold accused Wilders of doomsday thinking without any solutions.

'He wants to shoot hooligans in the leg, describes his fellow MPs as a gang ready to fight for millions, talks about the multicultural elite waging total war on the people, says millions of Muslims should be deported from Europe and more,' Pechtold told the paper.

'Of course he does not have to take any personal responsibility for Breivik's actions, but he does have to do so for the climate which he has helped create.'

Frustrations

'He has to understand what he is achieving by focusing on doomsday scenarios and black and white images,' the Volkskrant quoted Pechtold as saying.

'If you continually create a feeling of the apocalypse, you are contributing to a world without a future, without perspective. He is feeding his supporters frustrations and that is his responsibility.'

Pechtold said he wanted Wilders to stop avoiding public debate and to make it clear what his vision of society is. 'Come up with a solution once in a while,' Pechtold said.

Violence

And the D66 leader pointed out that Wilders himself has been quick to blame all Muslims for the actions of fundamentalists such as Al Qaeda.

'He even blames me for helping create the climate in which he is threatened,' Pechtold said.

In 2009, Wilders said that if anything happened to him or other PVV members Pechtold and other politicians 'have contributed to the climate in which some nutcases think it right [to use violence].'

Regardless of Wilders political beliefs(lol)its about time his supporters and voters realize that he is nothing more than a hypocrite. He is constantly contradicting himself and when caught out he screams its someone else's fault. If you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen. The only other politician i have heard whine and moan and blame others is the UK's Nick Griffin.

I can't believe we are now trying to blame Geert Wilders for the actions done by one man in Norway. It is sad what happened there, but just because Mr. Wilders was cited in the manifesto does not make him responsible for what a "lunatic" has done. Mr. Wilders is only trying to look out for the people of the Netherlands. Yes, Islam should be welcomed here, but it should be highly monitored. We do not want the next Bin Laden coming from the Netherlands. Stop blaming Mr. Wilders and start thinking about what can be done to stop such violence in the first place. Just because a person has their convictions does not mean he is guilty.

Mr Wilders has not created any climate, the climate has been created by decades of ridiculous immigration policies.

Wow. I'm glad someone (Pechtold) is voicing his concern in this matter and I really hope it is addressed by the PM. I also hope that Dutch voters will remember this when it comes time to vote again.

@hietter: you say "I can't believe we are now trying to blame Geert Wilders for the actions done by one man in Norway"... Where on earth did you get that idea? It is not in the article and no one has suggested it. The point is a completely different one, which hopefully you are dismissing on purpose and not out of ignorance (which is far more frightening)

I predict it's going to get a lot worse before this tiny country understands the sorts of tyrants and populist trouble makers who they've elected to their democratic institutions.

Judging by the number of Prince Bernhardlaans around the outskirts of Dutch cities, they're clearly too willing to overlook the massive faults (and frauds) of their so-called leaders.

Jitterboogie: recent polling shows that the connections in the shooter's manifesto and thoughts with the ideology of the PVV have had NO effect on the party's popularity here in the Netherlands. The anti-Islam party is the second most popular here.

This silly "Islamisation" myth should have been challenged a long time ago. There needs to be some safe quarters to challenge Wilders from.
Geert Wilders is partly responsible for the climate of hate and fear of "Muslim invasion" which is a MYTH! The whole PVV party is a threat to Dutch democracy!
The Dutch voter needs to know that there can never be a PVV government!
How long do you think the Netherlands would be regarded as a civilized, democratic nation if it had a gov't that criminalized the practice of Islam?
Not very long, and the Netherlands will have the same status as Iran!

Hietter, please reread the article. No one is blaming Wilders for the tragedy in Norway here, they are hoping he will take responsibility for helping create the climate in which this crime was committed.
Kudos to Pechtold, he once again has a great view and a clear way of putting it...

@hietter, if we don't voice out against polarization Mr W. believes creating we will have 1000+ Breivik in Europe.
@Phil, are you telling us the "ridiculous immigration policies" inspired Breivik action. If you analysis is correct then Bin Laden followers are inspire by the same "westerner in Arabian land".
It is better we condemn believes that can create polarization in our society. The world whether you like it on not is a global village we interdependent on each other whether black, white, blonde, European, American, Asian, etc. we should learn to co-exit.

The Norway killer was very, very wrong and cruel, but when it comes to his basic ideas and complaints, there are millions of disgusted citizens who feel the same about Islamization as he does. Ordnary moderate Muslims are never really being picked on when you hear about resentment of Islamists. What protesters hate is the hard-core believers who want to manipulate themselves and their religious lifestyle into our free societies. THEY ARE our enemies ! So get off of Geert Wilders back and focus your hatred and anger on the real problem : Muslims aggression etc. Wilders is a hero; he's fighting for all of us who know freedom is our right. Get mad at the enemy , not Geert .

I wonder what Wilders said when Theo van Gogh was killed? I wonder if he said something like: 'this is the lone act of one man, and by no means does Islam portend to have any affect on this persons behavior or mindset'. I somehow highly doubt it. I somehow think that instead they created a whole myth of the Netherlands being rife with integration problems and awash in immigrants and our problems.

Geert v.Leeuwen: I agree, this is going to get much much worse before it reaches its peak and starts to improve here in NL, and around the world. I hope we can avoid a civil war here in the meantime! This country is 180 degrees different on the inside than the tolerant liberal facade it shows in a superficial manner to the outside world. I am truly shocked and concerned for the future after reading some of the reactions here from the pro-Wilders people!
