Minister brings in tough rules for deporting Somali refugees

Asylum seekers from Somalia who have failed in their application to win refugee status can only be deported to central or southern parts of the country under tough new conditions, immigration minister Gerd Leers has told MPs.

In addition to having family members who can offer them protection, deportees must also be able to live according to the rules established by the fundamentalist Islamic group Al-Shabaab, the minister said in a briefing document.
Single women, minors without parents and people from non-Somali minorities may not be deported at all.
The new guidelines replace a moratorium on deportations to Somalia which was introduced in April.
