MPs to debate Franco German rescue package for Greece

MPs from parliament’s finance and European affairs committees will meet finance minister Jan Kees de Jager on Thursday morning to debate the Netherland’s response to the new rescue package for Greece and the eurozone.

German chancellor Angela Merkel and French president Nicolas Sarkozy have worked out a common position on a second financial package for Greece after seven hours of talks in Berlin.
The deal comes ahead of a crucial eurozone leaders’ summit later in the day on how to resolve the Greek debt crisis and ensure the stability of the eurozone.
Holidays
Earlier this week, De Jager said he was recalling MPs from their summer breaks to discuss the 11th hour plan. The Netherlands, like Germany, is keen to ensure more private sector involvement in the rescue bid, but France is opposed.
The details of the deal worked out by Merkel and Sarkozy have not yet been made public. According to political commentators, there is a good chance the debate will simply be a rehash of previous statements because the terms of the Merkel Sarkozy deal are still under wraps.
Meanwhile, De Jager said in a briefing note to MPs that he expects Italy to do more to cut government spending. The minister said he would raise the issue during Thursday’s summit.
Poll
A poll for television show EenVandaag shows that 64% of the Dutch do not believe De Jager when he says the billions of euros lent to Greece will be repaid.
At the same time 58% say they have confidence in the minister.
