The cabinet on Friday voted in favour of proposals to reduce the number of MPs in the lower house of parliament from 150 to 100 and cut the senate from 75 to 50 members.

The reduction is part of the coalition’s ambition to make the parliamentary apparatus smaller and more efficient.
An actual change in the size of parliament will require an amendment to the constitution, which would need to be supported by two-thirds of MPs.
The cabinet’s plan will now be sent to the Council of State for its opinion.
In particular, MPs from smaller parties fear a reduced parliament would mean they no longer have a voice.
