Health minister to stop funding anti-smoking group StivoroMonday 13 June 2011 The government is to stop subsidising the anti-smoking lobby group Stivoro from 2013 and its subsidy will be halved next year, the organisation said in a statement on Sunday. This year Stivoro was given a €2.7m government grant to run its stop smoking campaigns. The health ministry says it will continue to fund small-scale campaigns based, for example, on schools but no more nationwide efforts, according to the Telegraaf's report. Health minister Edith Schippers announced last week that help for people who want to stop smoking will no longer be included in the basic health insurance package. She has also lifted the ban on smoking in small cafes and bars and refused to employ more inspectors to make sure the ban is followed in larger premises.

Finally, a return to common-sense. Thank you for this fine example of critical thinking and fiscal responsibility with taxpayer dollars. By ladyraj | June 13, 2011 7:20 PM Instead of accepting taxation on nicotine and doling out a minor percentage of this money in "fighting" it, would it not be less hypocritical ( albeit less remunerative) to totally forbid its trade and usage? The money lost can always be recovered by high fines levied from producers, smugglers AND USERS; thus protecting the innocent bystander who has to endure the stench. By theo orval | June 15, 2011 4:40 AM In response to Maru, how much money did they get from Big Pharmer to implement the ban? After all, none of their claims have been verified. Example, SHS deaths were estimated, DHS deaths were estimated, smoking costs to health service were estimated. However, they can tell you exactly how many die in Road accidents, industrial accidents, illegal drug abuse. By LooseBruce | June 15, 2011 8:56 AM

So how much money did you get from the tobacco companies for cutting this funding and ending the ban on smoking in small cafes, Mevrouw Schippers?
