Cabinet drops terror suspect law

The cabinet has ‘silently scrapped’ draft legislation curtailing the movements of terrorist suspects, De Pers reports on Friday.

The legislation, put on ice by the previous government two years ago, would have given the authorities the right to closely monitor people suspected of terrorist activities by imposing banning orders and forcing them to make daily visits to the police.
This would hinder youths who, for example, had spent time in a training camp in Pakistan, from planning a terrorist attack, the paper says.
Justice minister Ivo Opstelten has withdrawn the legislation because other methods have been developed to nip potential terrorist activity in the bud. Dutch counter terrorism tzar Erik Akerboom also believes the legislation would be unnecessary.
