Mink farmers on offensive against impending ban

Mink farmers are launching a major publicity offensive in an effort to turn the tide against plans to phase out the sector, the Telegraaf reports.

The Netherlands is one of the biggest fur farming countries in the world, with around 160 farms producing five million pelts a year.
The government’s alliance partner PVV has joined the Socialists and Labour party to give majority support to a ban. The minority government made up of the CDA and VVD is opposed.
In 2009, MPs voted to phased out fur farming by 2018. That legislation still has to be passed by the upper house of parliament. A majority of the upper house is likely to be in favour of the ban.
