Senators will on Tuesday debate draft legislation from the ruling VVD and Labour party D66 which would give companies more rights when faced with ‘unreasonable’ requests from the tax office, the Financieele Dagblad reports.

‘I want to put a legal limit on tax inspectors’ curiosity,’ VVV MP Dezentjé Hamming told the paper.
Tax office demands can place an unreasonable burden on smaller firms who have to comply or face a high, estimated tax bill which has to be paid immediately, the MP says.

For example, one firm was asked to supply tax inspectors with copies of all email correspondence going back three years. Another had to supply translations of all documents in French.
The draft law gives companies the right to protest against information requests and to go court to fight their corner.
The bill was passed by the lower house of parliament last September. Finance minister Jan Kees de Jager argued against the legislation, saying it will lead to 80,000 protests and a €38m bill every year.
