Government firm on nuclear power plant and Zeeland site

The cabinet remains committed to ensuring a new permit to build a nuclear power station is awarded by 2015, economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen confirmed on Thursday.

However, plans to build a second reactor next to Borssele in Zeeland will have to take into account lessons learned from the disaster in Japan, Verhagen said.
‘By then, the lessons will have been learned and will be incorporated into the technical demands,’ he told MPs.
Borssele is the Netherlands only nuclear power plant and two competing energy firms have said they will apply to build a second one.
Labour MP Diederik Samsom said during the debate it is still too early to take decisions about where another nuclear plant should be located.
Some critics say the situation in Japan was made worse because three nuclear reactors were located next to each other.
