RWE willing to invest in Dutch nuclear power

German energy giant RWE is prepared to make significant investment in new Dutch nuclear power plants if this is politically possible, says the company’s CEO Jurgen Grossman in an interview with Saturday’s Financieele Dagblad.

RWE has made a €9.3bn bid to take over the Dutch energy utility Essent. The bid will go ahead as long as 80% of the shares are offered, Grossman says in the FD.
The offer includes Essent’s 50% in Holland’s only nuclear power station, Borssele. Although energy firm Delta, which owns the other 50%, is against the move, Grossman tells the paper that he is ‘extremely enthusiastic’ about the outcome of talks with Delta.
Delta, on the other hand, says that there has been no more than a courtesy meeting between the two parties, reports the FD.
Grossman says RWE has an investment budget of €80bn up to 2020 and that although part of this has already been allocated, there is enough over for new projects such as nuclear power plants.
RWE is also investing €2.4bn in a new coal and biomass power plant at Eemshaven in the north of the Netherlands.
