The fundamentalist Christian party SGP has called on the government to delay for a year its plans to ‘fine’ students who take more than four years to get a degree .

The government is planning to fine slow students €3,000 from the next academic year, taking their annual college fees to nearly €5,000.
The SGP says the delay is necessary to give students the chance to catch up.
MPs are due to debate the plan on Thursday. It has a slim majority in the lower house of parliament. However, SGP support could be crucial to get the legislation through the senate.

Meanwhile, Erasmus University in Rotterdam is to carry out an experiment next academic year, requiring first year social studies students to earn 60 study points or leave, the Telegraaf reports.
Only 47% of social studies students pass their degree within four years and the university wants them to speed up. If the plan is successful, it will be transferred to other departments.
At the moment, students need to earn 40 points in order to move on to their second year.
