Tax office chases EU civil servants for tax

The tax office has begun a campaign to get Dutch nationals who work for the European Union to pay asset tax on their property and savings in Belgium and the Netherlands.

While their salaries are exempt from income tax under EU rules, they should pay tax of 1.2% on the value of their assets in both countries.
A spokesman for the tax office told the Financieele Dagblad the campaign would focus on 2010 tax returns but that they did not rule out imposing back tax over preceding years.
