Senior traffic official opposes 130 kph limit

The most senior traffic offence official in the public prosecution department opposes raising the speed limit on many roads to 130 kph.

In an interview with the AD, Koos Spee says the increase will lead to more traffic accident deaths, is bad for the environment and will not help reduce jams.

Because the police will only levy fines at speeds of 137 kph and over (taking margins of error into account), Spee said he fears many drivers will actually drive well above the limit.

Risk of injury

In addition the stopping distance at 137 kph is 16 metres longer than at 127 kph, making accidents more likely.

‘If there is a crash, the risk of serious injury will increase sharply,’ Spee told the paper.

MPs are due to debate the new speed limit plans on Wednesday. Experiments on some roads are already under way or are being planned.
