Measures need to be taken to reduce the number of birds congregating near Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, junior transport minister Joop Atsma said on Friday.

In 2008 there were 160 instances of birds and planes flying into each other, well below the 2010 total of 280.
Last year, for example, a Royal Air Maroc aircraft lost a motor after an airborne collision with a flock of geese, news agency ANP said.
There is currently a six kilometre zone around the airport where industries which might attract birds are banned – such as fish processing or rubbish collection.
The minister wants to extend this to 10 or 13 kilometres.
