A €4.4bn project to widen and improve the motorway connections between Amsterdam, Schiphol airport and Almere can start at the end of this year, transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen said on Monday.

The project involves widening existing roads, building two tunnels and working on hundreds of bridges and viaducts, the ministry documents show.
In total 63 kilometres of motorway will be overhauled and expanded, including parts of the A1, A6, A9 and A10.
Once the project has been completed, motorists will be able to travel 30 kph faster in the region, the minister said. The entire project should be completed in 2020.
An additional €1.4bn has been earmarked for improving train connections between Lelystad and Schiphol airport.
