The Dutch government is looking at the option of seizing Libyan state assets in the Netherlands, foreign minister Uri Rosenthal said on Wednesday night.

‘But we have to be quick,’ Rosenthal told MPs during an emergency debate on the situation in the Middle Eastern country, where the regime is clamping down hard on anti-government protestors.
The minister said he has already raised the issue with justice minister Ivo Opstelten.
The Volkskrant revealed on Wednesday that Libyan state oil firm Tamoil and oil and gas exploration firm Verenex both have bases in Ridderkerk near Rotterdam. Tamoil operates around 160 petrol stations in the Netherlands.
Rosenthal also said he is in favour of sanctions against Libya as long as these do not affect the general population. He has already imposed an arms embargo following RTL reports that the Netherlands exported night vision equipment and helicopters to the Libyan regime.
During the debate, MPs called for Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to face the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
