EU foreign policy chief condemns Dutch woman’s execution

The European Union has condemned the hanging of a Dutch-Iranian woman for drug trafficking, news agency UPI reports on Monday.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton criticised the execution of Zahra Bahrami, 46, and deplored the fact that officials in Tehran failed to grant her a ‘fair and transparent judicial process,’ Ashton’s spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic is quoted as saying.
‘The issue of human rights in Iran … will in the future be also a special point on the agenda of the EU foreign affairs council,’ the spokeswoman added.
The Netherlands has frozen contacts with Iran over the execution in the early hours of Saturday morning. Bahrami was arrested in late 2009 after taking part in an anti-government demonstration.
