Population moves to urban areas

The population of the Netherlands has grown in the northern central belt and around other urban centres but is shrinking in some border areas, the national statistics office CBS said on Monday.

The population has grown by 269,000 or 1.6% since 2005, the CBS said. The population of Utrecht has grown by 30,000 and Amsterdam by 25,000.
The northern parts of the Randstad urban belt, The Hague and Groningen are particularly attractive to immigrants and to Dutch nationals from rural areas, the CBS said.
The population of Zuid-Limburg, eastern Groningen and the eastern border regions has gone down sharpest.
