The Netherlands has slipped from sixth to seventh place in the UN’s ranking of the countries which the highest standards of human development.

Liechtenstein leapt 13 places in the rankings to overtake the Dutch.
According to the UN rankings ‘the Netherlands tops the list of the most gender-equal countries, followed by Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland.’
The Netherlands has very low maternal mortality, has among the world’s lowest adolescent fertility rate and is close to parity in educational attainment, political participation and employment, the report says.
Contradictions
The findings on employment and political participation are at odds with recent statistics in the Netherlands itself.
Last month, the Dutch government’s socio cultural policy bureau SCP said some 54% of Dutch women depended on the state or another person for at least part of their upkeep.
And the new government has been criticised because women account for just 20% of the ministers and junior ministers.
