PVV appointments lead to parliamentary committee confusion

Parliament has stopped appointing MPs to chair parliamentary committees because of problems with the two PVV nominees, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

Raymond de Roon, an MP and member of Almere city council, is supposed to head the security and justice committee, while PVV dissident Hero Brinkman has been given the immigration and asylum committee job.
But De Roon’s appointment is under fire because he already has two jobs, and Brinkman is not popular within the anti-Islam party for his efforts to bring democracy to the party. He is also very outspoken, the paper says.
The committee appointments are made by the party leadership and the jobs have to be done by experienced parliamentarians, meaning the PVV has few people to choose from.
Parliament will have 12 permanent committees and five general committees, which look at legislation and make recommendations to government.
