MPs back tax system overhaul

A majority of MPs want the government to give the tax system a major overhaul to simplify it, news agency ANP reports.

But the parties are divided along political lines about how the tax system should be streamlined.
At the moment, the tax office has 30,000 civil servants and deals with 25 different taxes, Liberal MP Helma Neppérus said during a debate on the tax system on Monday. Some, such as the ‘crazy tax on packaging’ can go, she said.
The Labour party is in favour of environmental taxes but wants to see the current system made simpler. At the moment, the better-off find it easier to find their way round the system and benefit from tax breaks, Labour MP Ed Groot told ANP.
Junior finance minister Frans Weekers said he supports tax reform but pointed out there is no money to fund tax cuts. ‘If you scrap one tax, such as the tax on packaging, another tax must go up,’ he said.
