Ireland aid package, immigration on Rutte Sarkozy talks agenda

The EU agreed support package to bail out Ireland is ‘very important’ for the stability of the euro, prime minister Mark Rutte said during a short visit to Paris.

Rutte held around an hour of talks with French president Nicholas Sarkozy as part of the new prime minister’s ‘get to know’ you tour.
According to the NRC, the two also discussed immigration and integration policy. Rutte is looking for French support for the Netherlands’ wish to reduce non-western immigration by up to 50%.
Working together
‘We will need to work together in Europe in order to realise the Netherlands’ wishes,’ Rutte is quoted as saying. Some Dutch plans, drawn up by the anti-Islam PVV, will involve changing EU treaties.
‘It is about being open as a country to highly educated people who you need for your economy and at the same time being aware not everyone can be let in,’ Rutte said. ‘This permeates the Dutch coalition agreement but it is also high on the German and French agendas.’
Dutch immigration minister Gerd Leers will travel to Paris to discuss tighter rules with his French counterpart soon, the Volkskrant reported.
The NRC notes that Sarkozy himself did not leave the presidential palace to join Rutte at the post-talks press conference.
