New junior minister under Wilder’s fire over dual nationality

New junior health minister Marlies Veldhuijzen van Zanten-Hyllner will face calls to give up her Swedish passport when parliament debates on the new government’s coalition accord.

Geert Wilders, whose anti-Islam PVV has agreed to back the minority coalition in a number of policy areas, said on Saturday he will call on the minister to ditch her dual nationality.
Dual nationality for ministers is ‘extremely undesirable’ Wilders said.
He made similar objections about two junior ministers with dual nationality in the previous government.
Prime minister Mark Rutte was well aware that Veldhuijzen van Zanten-Hyllner had two nationalities when she was given the job, Trouw reports. The junior minister, who is new to politics, was born in Gothenburg and has a Swedish father.
However, according to the Parool, several members of the cabinet had been outspoken in their rejection of dual nationality.
For example, junior social affairs minister Paul de Krom has said dual nationality ‘implies loyalty to two countries’ and that ‘foreigners’ should have to chose.
