New government wants to rebuild trust, says prime minister Rutte

The new Dutch government wants to help the Netherlands through the crisis and rebuild trust in politicians again, prime minister Mark Rutte said in his first news conference as premier.

‘The cabinet has been put together carefully so we can meet the country and parliament with an open mind,’ Rutte said.
The cabinet is ‘extending a hand to society and othe political parties.’
‘We have to show that when politicians make agreements, those agreements are met,’ Rutte said. Immigration and public safety are areas where trust needs to be restored.
Other parties
Rutte’s right-wing VVD Liberals and the Christian Democrats have formed a minority government supported in parliament by the anti-Islam PVV on some issues.
However, Rutte said, the government would be looking for support from other parties for measures which the PVV does not support. ‘We will try to recruit as much support for as many proposals as possible,’ he said.
Rutte also praised his predecessor Jan Peter Balkenende. ‘He has led the country under difficult circumstances following the murder of Pim Fortuyn,’ Rutte said. ‘He has left the country stronger than he found it.’
Rutte has also received congratulations from European Commission chairman José Manuel Barroso who said he is looking forward to working together with Rutte on ‘the challenges facing Europe’.
Next week the new prime minister will visit Belgium and Luxembourg. Berlin, Paris and London will follow as soon as possible, he said.
