‘Domestic violence therapy largely useless’

Some 95% of domestic abusers go on to beat their wives [or husbands] after treatment for their behaviour, according to Amsterdam University researcher Fleur Kraanen.

And more than half of the men and women who batter their partners have drink or drugs problems, Kraanen’s research shows.
‘Alcohol and cocaine lower your limits. In one third of cases, the perpetrator had used alcohol or drugs,’ she says in an interview with the Volkskrant. Cannabis users tend to get violent after the effect of the drugs has worn off, she said.
One in eight people are likely to be victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives, the paper says.
