Resistance grows among Christian Democrats - Update

Friday 13 August 2010

The number of signatories to a petition by Christian Democrats against the involvement of Geert Wilders and his anti-Islam PVV party in any government has reached 333.

Since the petition was published in Trouw on Thursday, the number of signatories doubled from an initial 44 to 100 in one day. By Friday afternoon it had reached 333.

The signatories want the party to stop negotiating with the PVV and the Liberal VVD for a minority government supported in parliament by Wilders. They say the ideology of the PVV is 'against the Dutch constitution and a threat to our democratic society'.

A spokesman for party leader Maxime Verhagen told the press on Thursday that Verhagen understands the concerns of the party members, but added: 'We are only at the beginning of negotiations and it's the result that matters'.

Party conference

A special party conference is scheduled for the end of August when Verhagen will explain to party members what sort of support Wilders is offering and what he wants in return. But the signatories, who include local politicians and former MPs and mayors, are not prepared to wait.

According to historian Wouter Beekers, who initiated the petition, Christian Democrats will tend to accept what Verhagen says at the conference and action must be taken now, reports the Volkskrant.

Unique action

It is most unusual for Christian Democrats to make any criticism of their party public, particularly in the form of a mass demonstration. But many members are still keeping silent.

Some, like Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, have already criticised the action. The former Nato general secretary told the Volkskrant he would not be joining 'that herd of old elephants'. In his opinion, former politicians always think they know best.

Main problem in our country only will be overcome whit a broad alliance, signed between all democratic parties, to implement a law addressed to protect our menaced democracy. A law able to ban any party which propose actions deployed by Nazis, like ethnic registration. Or actions such Koran ban, deployed by fanatic totalitarian and foreign organizations like old Spanish Inquisition.
In France, Germany, Spain, UK, Sweden and Finland, the law bans, and general prosecutor of the state starts investigation on charge of possible association oriented to crime, any party that defines itself as 'anti-any religion'. PVV defines itself as 'anti-Islamic religion', so would be there banned and under investigation on charge of possible association oriented to crime.

I'm starting to feel quite pride of the Christian Democrats -- even if I am not one of them. Well done, all the signatoriers!!

What has happened to democracy in the Netherlands. The people have spoken,,why is the elite fighting this. God look after the Netherlands. It was a beautiful country with democratic ideals. Around the world it is now seen as a place where you had better keep your mouth shut. Don't tell the truth...Keep people in the dark and feed them lies...Not a pretty site. It is no longer the envy of other countries,,,in fact many dutch are getting out and people from around the world are beginning to understand why

I think Geert Wilders is just like the republicans in the USA, my country. Someone from Holland said he's worse; I think he is tame compared to the right wing in America. Maybe I don't know because I don't see what goes in in the Netherlands except for this newsletter. But both are at war with humanity and human rights/civil rights. Jesus did not teach such practices. He taught love for all. He did not set up a government either. His "kingdom" was spiritual/religious; and it had nothing to do with the paranoid governments and people who murdered him.

I am a muslim from cape town, south Africa and i have entrenched family and social links with the afrikaner(formerly dutch) community at home. My best friend is afrikaner and there is NOTHING that we wont do for each other.

So when i read that a dutch party wants to ban the Quran it really saddens me.

The popularity of the PVV is increasing and the CDA have to face facts. You can only deny democracy for so long.

Leave NL? I don't think so. Some of us Americans are rushing to NL because it's so much better than American soil. It's still a better government, still a beautiful country and still has better civil rights.

I really don't understand why some Dutch are
against Gert Wilders and PVV when the party
has increased it's Parliamentary Seats from
9 to 24 which when translated to majority Dutch opinion means overhelming support for Gert Wilders and PVV.

Jaap de Hoop-Scheffer might well say that those opposing Geert Wilders are a 'herd of old elephants'. He should know as he has been elephanting the room for years.

Wilder's party was not the first placed party, nor the second placed. He came in third, with a staggering 15.5% of the vote. 15.5%! In what language is 15% 'overwhelming support' 'Some Dutch' aren't against Wilders: as 17 out of every 20 voters proved, 'most' dutch are.

It is a pleasure to see that the Dutch "center" is collapsing. At the next election, most CDA voters will vote either for the "left" or the "right", depending on where they stand on Wilders, and this petition only serves to twist the knife in the wound.

Incidentally, this petition is blatantly contrary to the spirit of proportional representation. In the PR system, you vote for your party and trust them to use their judgement. I don't like the system, but if you accept PR, then you have no right to complain when your party leader's judgement is different from yours: you just have to shut up until the next election.

There are 150 seats in the parliament, Wilders only won 24. If I've done the math correctly , it means that only 16% of those who voted chose the PVV.
Which means that 84% did not vote for him!!
Maybe this will help you understand why "some" Dutch do not support him!
How do you figure out that 16% is "overwhelming support"??

people say "his party has gotten many votes through a democratic election" , true ! so did another person and it didn't turn out very good.
