One student signs up to study Frisian

Wednesday 25 August 2010

Just one student has registered to take a degree in Frisian at Groningen University this year, the Volkskrant reports on Wednesday.

If no-one else registers before the October 1 deadline, Grytsje Nicolaij from Leeuwarden will be the only student. Last year, eight people started a degree in the Netherlands' second official language.

Professor Goffe Jensma told local radio new rules allowing universities to set their own fees for second degrees had hurt the popularity of Frisian.

Groningen is the only Dutch university to offer a bachelor's and master's degree in Frisian. Amsterdam's VU stopped in 1992.
