New football law too limited

Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb told NRC on Friday he is ‘disappointed at the scope’ of the new football law that comes into force on September 1.

The new law gives mayors the power to ban troublemakers from the stadium or to enforce a duty to report to the police where there is a risk of repeated disturbance of the peace.
Aboutaleb says this will not tackle the worst violence. ‘I understand you cannot take away people’s freedom of movement too quickly but this law is too limited,’ he told the paper.
In tackling group violence, he will first have to know which individuals in the crowd started the trouble and each of them will deny they are to blame.
He points to next week’s match when Feyenoord travels to Gent. ‘If hooligans are planning to travel to the match, I cannot tell them not to and remove their passports,’ he said.
The mayor says he will be testing the limits of the new law.
