Military academy charged with misconduct

The military academy in Breda has received more complaints following reports at the weekend of seven cases of violence, assault and misconduct by instructors and cadets against female recruits.

The military union ACOM said on Monday it has received eight new complaints, all from women who have left the establishment.
The union’s chairman Jan Kleian told the Telegraaf the academy does not handle complaints properly. He quoted one instance where a cadet was assaulted by fellow students. Nothing was done about the culprits, according to Kleian, while the cadet was moved elsewhere to prevent any more trouble.
Insiders say the defence ministry knows about the misconduct because there is an internal and confidential report on the matter at the KIM institute in Den Helder, where marine officers are trained.
The defence ministry would not comment on Monday, saying there would be a reaction from acting defence minister Eimert van Middelkoop later this week.
