Thieves steal 100kg church bells

Wednesday 28 July 2010

Thieves have stolen two 100kg bronze bells from a church in Apeldoorn, news agency ANP reports on Wednesday.

The bells were hanging at a height of six metres from the ground and were taken at some point on Tuesday night, police said.

Last week thieves made off with 11 17kg bells from a carillon in a church in nearby Twello.

Collectors and scrap metal merchants have been asked to keep an eye out for the bells which police suspect may have been taken by metal thieves.

In America they steal the giant cactus...

In the UK, Victorian paving stones...

In the Netherlands, ding dongs, it's now time to sit back and wonder, hey!.. - Where's my bloody garden shed gone!

Talk about dropping to an all time low. Regardless if the thieves believe in a higher power, I trust karma will step forward eventually.

The value of church bells goes far beyond the material worth of their metal. The workmanship involved in producing a church bell is the artistic craft that makes a bell produce particular sounds and notes. In the religious sphere, of course, there is also the important correlation with the liturgy and prayer.
