Spending on long term care up 75% in 10 years

Spending on nursing homes and long-term care has risen nearly 75% over the past 10 years, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS on Wednesday.
The increase is due to the greying population, an increase in eligibility and the growth in social service grants, the CBS said.
Some 600,000 people are currently using AWBZ-funded services, which cost a total €23bn last year, the CBS said.
The AWBZ is a social insurance policy paid for by everyone to fund long term care. Premiums account for some two-thirds of spending, the government contributes 25% and patient fees make up the rest.
