Speed trap fines soar at roadworks

Friday 30 July 2010

The number of speeding tickets issued by police so far this year has gone up in a 'spectacular fashion,' Trouw reports on Friday.

Last year, traffic police issued 8,505 fines for speeding but so far this year the total has reached 28,505, the paper says. This is because police have increased their controls on places where lower speed limits have been introduced because of roadworks.

The average fine is €35, the paper says. Speeding close to roadworks carries higher fines than speeding in general.

A police spokesman told the paper the number of speed traps has gone up because of the increase in major road improvement projects begun under government fast track planning laws.

A spokesman for motoring organisation ANWB said if the majority of drivers are breaking the speed limit at roadworks, there is something wrong with the road set up.

There must be something wrong with these figures. They look suspiciously alike.

Usually, I do not over speed but I also got the ticket due to the roadworks this year. But the speed limit signs are placed here and there, it's confused to know which one is correct.

Not to speak of the "road construction areas" where no one is working and or no equipment is to be seen.

I believe it has gone up.. my husband got a ticket for going a mere 5km over the speed limit. I think 50 in a 45 or something similar to that. INSANE.

I was shocked to receive 5 fines last week for a total of €400; unbelievable when they want to take money from you; worst thing, i do the A1 everyday twice, so i should probably expect more; this is ripping us of our salary without proper communication.

I do think speed limits are neccesary not just for safety, but to ensure the flow of traffic at busy times. I was suprised however to recieve a speeding fine issued at midnight on an empty dutch motorway for travelling 4kmh over the 100kmh limit, safety nor trafficflow required here, just a little more commonsense.

Moneymaking, YES.

No big deal.. Here in Canada all fines dubble in construction area's, weather if there is any work going on or not. Plus we get demerit point on your license and an increase in insurance rate so that 35 euries is no big deal
