The number of speeding tickets issued by police so far this year has gone up in a ‘spectacular fashion,’ Trouw reports on Friday.

Last year, traffic police issued 8,505 fines for speeding but so far this year the total has reached 28,505, the paper says. This is because police have increased their controls on places where lower speed limits have been introduced because of roadworks.
The average fine is €35, the paper says. Speeding close to roadworks carries higher fines than speeding in general.
A police spokesman told the paper the number of speed traps has gone up because of the increase in major road improvement projects begun under government fast track planning laws.
A spokesman for motoring organisation ANWB said if the majority of drivers are breaking the speed limit at roadworks, there is something wrong with the road set up.
