Landlord jailed for role in tenants’ deaths in a fire

A landlord in Arnhem has been jailed for one month for his role in the death of two people in a fire at a building he owned in the city.

The fire was set by an arsonist in 2008 and two people living in the attic were killed. The landlord was jailed for failing to install smoke alarms, for failing to ensure there was a proper escape route and for not taking other legally-required measures to reduce the effect of a fire.
The arsonist was jailed for seven years earlier this year.
