Hepatitis B added to standard baby vaccination list

All babies born in the Netherlands from 2012 onwards can be vaccinated against Hepatitis B, caretaker health minister Ab Klink said on Thursday.

The national health council earlier recommended the minister include Hepatitis B in the package of vaccinations given as standard to all babies. Vaccination is voluntary.
Babies are currently vaccinated against diptheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, mumps, measles, german measles, and two bacteria which can cause meningitis.
But the council’s recommendation that the ministry organise a ‘catch up’ programme for the under-12s will not be followed, Klink said.
Efforts to encourage young teenage girls to get vaccinated against cervical cancer last year proved a flop, with a take up rate of around 50%.
