Finance minister wants to make bank ‘stress tests’ public

Caretaker finance minister Jan Kees de Jager said on Thursday that he wants to publish the results of checks of the so-called stress tests which a number of Dutch financial institutions are undergoing.

‘We are considering whether it is necessary to publish the tests on an individual basis. And partly in the interests of transparency I think it is,’ De Jager said.
At least four Dutch banks are undergoing a stress test, he said, but declined to give more details. The results are due around July 23.

Economy gets worse

The aim of the stress tests is to find out if the banks have enough capital to withstand another two years of an economy that may deteriorate.
Banks have to imagine the worst possible economic news, a so-called ‘stress scenario,’ and then calculate if they’ve got the capital reserves to cover losses. Factors could include a very sharp rise in unemployment or a house price plunge.
