Paper tickets phased out in Amsterdam

Thursday 03 June 2010

Passengers using buses, trams and the metro in Amsterdam will have to travel using a public transport smart card, or ov-chipkaart, from Thursday.

The greater Amsterdam region is now the second area of the country to have stopped the use of paper tickets. Rotterdam made the change last year.

So, what will this mean for tourists? Will we pay more now to ride the tram?

We were just up in Amsterdam and used the new chip cards. They are easy to find and use. However, they are more expensive than the old strips. We had a large group and ended up having to buy 8 24 hour cards, which each cost roughly the same as an old 15 trip card. To do the traveling we did, would have probably required 3 strips, instead of 8 cards and if there were any trips left over we could have kept them. Instead the new cards expire. So yes, they are more expensive overall.
